Saladin and the Saydjari Clan

Usamah ibn Munqidh al-Shayzari was a trusted advisor and friend to Saladin. In addition, Saladin admired Usamah as a poet and carried an anthology of poetry created by Usamah with him wherever he went.

One of Saladin’s favorite lines of poetry was from an old Bedouin verse containing the line “The sword is truer than what is told in books: In its edge is the separation between truth and falsehood.” You can read more details on the page called Crusades on the website.
